The Russian University of Sport «GTSOLIFK» is the largest higher educational establishment in  the field of physical education and sport.

During its existence, RUS «GTSOLIFK» has established itself as a leading sport university for training highly skilled specialists. More than 60 thousand highly qualified specialists have been trained here including about 5 thousand foreign specialists from 115 countries. Among its students and graduates, there are more than 200 Olympic, European and World champions. Pavel Kolobkov, Ilya Kovalchuk, Lev Yashin, Irina Rodnina, Valery Kharlamov, Svetlana Zhurova, Pavel Bure, Alexander Ovechkin, Dmitry Nosov, Adelina Sotnikova, Aliya Mustafina, Anastasia Davydova, Sophia Velikaya, Andrei Rublev and many others are among them.

The leading place of RUS «GTSOLIFK» among other universities of physical education and sports is due to its high scientific potential and existence of the teaching staff of the highest qualification. Merited Workers of Physical Education and Merited Workers of Science of the Russian Federation, Merited Workers of Culture of the Russian Federation are among the university faculty. Classes are taught by 53 Dr. habil. and professors, Academicians and Corresponding Members of the Russian Academy of Education, Merited Workers of the Higher School of the Russian Federation, Merited Coaches of the USSR and the Russian Federation, Merited Masters of Sports and Masters of Sports of International Class.

Important research is carried out by specialists of RUS «GTSOLIFK» on the issues of theory and methodology of sports training, optimization of elite athletes preparation for the Olympic Games, World and European championships. The efforts of scientists are aimed at identifying and putting into practice the most effective means, forms and methods of conditional, technical, tactical, psychological and theoretical training of athletes. 

The research team contributes a lot to the rationalization of the planning of year-round and long-term sports training, to the improvement of pedagogical, medical and physiological control during training. Much attention is paid to the issues of youth sports, the problems of recovery and improvement of athletic performance.

Today, 6468 students, including 600 citizens of foreign countries, are studying at the RUS «GTSOLIFK». The structure of the university includes: thе Faculty of Coaching, the Faculty of Adapted  Physical Education, Recreation and Tourism; the Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities; the Faculty of Master's Training and the Department of Postgraduate Studies. The university has 39 departments. The university also has a Central Olympic Academy. 

Specialists are also trained at the Institute of Additional Education. On the basis of the University, the Research Institute of Sports and Sports Medicine and the Historical and Sports Museum conduct their activities. Employees of the Scientific Research Institute of Sports and Sports Medicine of the GTSOLIFK carry out work on the integration of science into higher education, develop the latest techniques and technologies and apply them in the physical education and sports sphere.

The RUS «GTSOLIFK» is proud of  its Museum of sports  history and the largest in the world scientific library in the sphere of physical education and sport. The library's fund is more than 600,000 volumes, and the museum's fund contains 12,000 museum items: sports prizes and certificates, paraphernalia and inventory, badges and medals, personal belongings of famous athletes, champion students and teachers.

The university's sports facilities are also unique: 14 specialized gyms, an athletics arena, a shooting range, an ice arena, a football stadium, 10 tennis courts, a swimming pool, a universal sports and entertainment complex for 4,000 people.

The university buildings are accessible to people with disabilities — there are access tracks and handrails, elevators in the administrative and biomedical buildings, signs and inscriptions for students and applicants with hearing impairment, properly equipped toilet rooms. In the university’s main building there is a canteen with the access for such people.

RUS «GTSOLIFK» is a dynamically developing university with a rich history and traditions. The university staff is constantly striving to conquer new heights. In the winter of 2018, it was decided in Minsk to appoint the RUS «GTSOLIFK» as the basic organization of the CIS member states in the field of physical education and sports.

Nowadays, RUS «GTSOLIFK» cooperates with employers-representatives of state, public and commercial organizations. Among them are the Ministry of Sport of the Russian Federation, the Olympic Committee of Russia, sports federations, fitness clubs («World Class», «Planet Fitness», «Gold Gym»), mass media (TV channels, periodicals, radio, Internet publications), travel companies, etc. The high theoretical and practical level of training of university graduates guarantees them a job in this prestigious professional area of employment. The university also joined the Olympiad «I am a professional», becoming the organizer of the profile direction «Sports coach and fitness industry».

On July 21, 2022, the University was renamed the Federal State Budgetary Educational Institution of Higher Education «Russian University of Sport «GTSOLIFK» by Order of the Ministry of Sport of the Russian Federation No. 612.
